The Institute for the Study of Environment, Sustainability and Energy (ESE) exists to foster research, education and community engagement about the environment and sustainability. The ESE integrates perspectives and methods from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, technology, and engineering. The Environmental Studies degree offered by ESE prepares students to meet environmental challenges on a local, regional, and/or global level. The environmental studies program offers seven areas of emphasis: biodiversity and environmental restoration, energy studies, environmental policy, nature in society, sustainable food systems, water sciences, and secondary educator licensure. ESE students analyze solutions to energy demands; assess the impact of environmental, climatic, and energy challenges facing society; and learn how to promote sustainability and the new policies surrounding it. Our graduates provide needed expertise to industry, government, NGOs, and academic research. Recognizing that some of the best learning occurs outside the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in hands-on learning through for-credit internships, faculty-led research opportunities and getting involved in NIU’s native plant garden.
