One of its kind…through access and support to incoming NIU Students.
CHANCE continues that support today! With a sharper focus on retention and graduation, CHANCE is committed to helping students thrive toward graduation. CHANCE partners with services and resources across campus to meet their primary academic needs.
One of the challenges that students encounter is meeting the rising costs of education, specifically books. Students who are eligible for financial assistance have a window of opportunity to purchase books using their financial aid. The tenth day of classes, that window of opportunity closes. We want to bridge the gap between the tenth day and the need for books.
We have two goals for Huskies United: the first goal is toward NIU's “Common Read”. This year the book is Trevor Noah’s “Born A Crime”. All freshmen will need to purchase the “Common Read” for their English Course or the UNIV 101 course. All CHANCE freshmen will need the Common Read and we hope to reach goal one which allows us to purchase enough books for the incoming class.
The second goal is to develop a fund that allows us to help students meet their needs related to education. Texts are not just paper these days and some students will need access codes especially for math “books”.
Every year for a variety of reasons we have students that miss the ten day deadline and for many students, purchasing books without financial aid is a challenge. We hope to bridge that gap with available funds that will help students purchase what they need. This can only happen with your support.
Today, CHANCE alumni are employed as dentists, teachers, physicians, engineers, artists, entrepreneurs, accountants, athletes and public servants. Many alumni continue to support the program by volunteering to assist currently enrolled students as they pursue their academic goals at NIU.
