Outreach and Educational Engagement includes educating and training college students, employees and the community on ways to prevent and intervene in negative situations. These intervention techniques are tools that give guidance on how to safely intervene in negative situations to decrease the momentum of the situation and prevent further violence.
The Active Bystander program is a peer-led initiative in which students are trained to provide workshops to other students on how to utilize the three D's of violence prevention. The three D's include: Direct: Intervene by saying "that's not cool, stop" or "Let's all separate to think...", Distract: Intervene by distracting one or all members involved in the negative behavior i.e. "hey don't I know you from class?" or drop something and ask for help to pick it up, or Delegate by asking an authority figure to assist or call 911.
Along with the Active Bystander program, many other awareness presentations and activities are provided every year to allow students to gain more insight into healthy relationships, what consent looks like, available resources, and how to ensure all Huskies and the community are safe.
Student internships and scholarships focused on violence prevention provide students with a unique education skillset and perspective which is more important today than ever before. With the level of violence increasing, students can be the catalyst for change.
The funds you so generously provide will assist in maintaining and enhancing violence prevention programs at Northern Illinois University.
