The Adela de la Torre Latino Honor Society (ATLHS) mission is to recognize and achieve excellence amongst Latinos through scholarship, promoting leadership in students and helping to render service through a unified effort.
ATLHS values contribute towards members’: leadership scholarship and service. It promotes excellence in Latino students by establishing a presence of Latino cultures on campus and strengthening students’ understanding of their Latino heritage and culture.
Emily Prieto, Ph.D., founder, had a vision to create an honor society at NIU in which Latino students would identify their potential and work collaboratively to advance together. On August 25, 2011, she met with Vanessa Segundo to begin selection of candidates for an executive board charged with establishing and implementing the vision of transformational diversity through intentional and strategic programming. In honor of her great mentor, Prieto decided to name this new honor society the Adela de la Torre Honor Society (ATHS) to enable the legacy of success through education to be envisioned and embodied by all future members. In 2017, the name was changed to Adela de la Torre Latino Honor Society (ATLHS).
